His major early hits include Purab Aur Paschim, Sachaa Jhutha, Mera Gaon Mera Desh , Mere Apne etc. He received a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999 for his contribution to the cinema industry. He entered politics in 1997 by joining Bharatiya Janata Party. He later contested in Lok Sabha poll. Noted actors Rahul Khanna and Akshaye Khanna were his sons. He was a bollywood star in leading roles during 1980s. He had a good physique compared to other bollywood actors of that time.
